Post 18: Piecing the story together
Enthusiasm level: Distracted
Progress: Further fascination
Quote: “That is where I write some of my best songs, in bed, just laying there.”
I have mentioned previously all the brilliant people who have generously offered or lent services, time, objects and stories to the project. Well today was no exception. One of our wonderful volunteers, Anny, left on my desk a fascinating file of 1960s documents which she collected at the time. One of the papers which I was riveted by was the International Times dated March 28-April 10 1969. It was fascinating and completely distracting. In amongst articles on Czechoslovakia, Greek fascism, adverts for records shops and a “coloured workers” May Day strike, was a report of an interview between Jimi and Jane de Mendelssohn that he gave here in the flat. The interview appears as a verbatim transcription of their conversation including referencing every time he laughs which he seems to do a lot. Reading the article set within the paper of the time gives a real flavour of the era and will certainly contribute to our interpretation. Thanks Anny.
