Post 19: Hitting the streets
Enthusiasm level: Busy, busy
Progress: Frantic walking
Quote: “What am I doing here?”
It has been a week of meetings in different areas of London and whenever possible I try to move around the capital on foot. George and Jimi were incredibly lucky to live so centrally and walking is frequently an option. Whether it be Bloomsbury, Victoria, Knightsbridge or Westminster I pound the streets. It was on one such journey that unadvisedly I found myself on Oxford Street. This is never a sensible route choice, the pavements are always packed pretty much at any time and it is virtually impossible to walk in a straight line. As I was beginning to regret my amateur decision I began thinking about what it was like in 1969. I imagine it was a lot less busy and that when Jimi walked along the street he turned a few heads. Looking around the sea of bodies in 2014 made me wonder whether he would have turned heads today. Of course fame turns heads but would his style have turned heads? There are now so many different, radical, unusual and plain mad styles today it is hard to stand out. No doubt he would have found a way.

it’s not actually Oxford Street, but the Kings Road in 1969 – gives an idea of what it was like back then:

As soon as time travel gets invented, I’ve been
Fabulous photos. Thanks for sharing.
thanks for this… but it was jimi’s aura, his spirit that made the head turns.. the wonderful clothes were just decoration.. and maybe people would have thought that is why they look… or maybe it was the catalyst to make them look… but if he’d been disguised in normality, people would still look…
