Post 41: Feeling the vibe
This is the room where we heard the auralisation of our Learning Studio
One of the important elements of this project is the planned for creation of a dedicated space for activities, workshops, concerts and events – a Learning Studio. This space will allow us to accommodate school groups and other learning activities throughout the week rather just when we are closed to the public on Mondays as well as give an additional space for performance. It has been very carefully acoustically designed so that there is no noise disturbance for neighbours and equally no external noise to disturb audience members. Our tucked away courtyard can get pretty rowdy during the summer months!
To give a sense of how this new space might sound once created our wonderful acoustic engineers, Gillieron Scott, very kindly invited the team to their studio to listen to the “auralisation” of the space. Basically using their very clever equipment they managed to digitally create the sound of the room. They fed anechoic recorded sound samples through their “digital mock up” of the room which gave us a good sense of what listening in the room will be like.
As well as some spoken word, in homage to our great men they specifically recorded Handel and Hendrix anechoic samples, a section of one of the keyboard suites and the opening bars of Little Wing. After adjusting our ears to the scenario, apparently brains overcompensate for imagined situations such as this, it sounded really rather good. We listened a couple of times, it was much better to listen with your eyes shut. It would be divisive for me to suggest which sounded better suffice to say I thought both were pretty awesome.
