2pm – Handel House tour
3.30pm – Hendrix Flat tour
Description
Step into a world of culture, history and music with a guided tour of Handel & Hendrix in London. Our tours allow you to find out the full stories of our two musical masters, George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix.
Handel House Tour
The Handel House Tours every Friday afternoon paint the wonderful picture of Handel’s life here at 25 Brook Street, where the master of Baroque Music lived for the last 36 years of his life. Our highly experienced volunteers guide you through the great composer’s home room by room, revealing stories of epic collaborations, fearsome rivalries and incomparable musical brilliance.
You will start in the Composition Room – where Handel wrote his famous oratorio Messiah in only 24 days – followed by a chance to see the Music Room, where Handel entertained guests and rehearsed with his famous musical entourage – you may even be lucky enough to hear a rehearsal taking place in the very space Handel rehearsed for decades. After climbing the original 350-year-old staircase, you will enter Handel’s private quarters and see the bedroom in which he passed away in 1759. Your guide’s unparalleled knowledge, and the great man’s presence that remains in every creaking floorboard, makes for a tour like no other.
Hendrix Flat Tour
Step into the psychedelic world of the 1960s with our weekly Hendrix Flat Tours. Our highly knowledgeable guides will take you on a trip down memory lane, starting the tour in front of Jimi’s front door at 23 Brook Street. You will hear all about the neighbourhood Jimi loved so much, from the clubs he frequented to the spots where he picked out the clothes that gave him his iconic look.
The tour continues in Jimi’s footsteps, going through his front door and up his original staircase, which is not usually open to the public. At the top, you will find the humble home of one of music’s greatest legends.
Between exhibition spaces focused on Hendrix’s life in London and his eclectic record collection, as well as Jimi’s recreated bedroom, you will hear about the fascinating stories that took place in this iconic space. From the stories of late-night jams and parties with the likes of George Harrison and Ginger Baker, to Jimi’s everyday life with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, the tour will shed light on the legend that was Jimi Hendrix. A shy, domestic image of the Rock God emerges when you spend this time in “the only home [he] ever had”.
You can join each of our tours every Friday afternoon. The Handel House tour commences at 2pm and the Hendrix Flat tour follows at 3.30pm.
