Handel’s New Star: Giovanni Carestini

Joanna Harries (mezzo-soprano), Jo Ramadan (harpsichord)
Description
The year is 1733 and Handel’s most famous singer, the castrato Senesino, has just left him for the rival London opera company.
He pins his hopes on a new rising star: Giovanni Carestini, whose unique voice reportedly runs the full gamut from a powerful clear soprano to a full and rich alto.
Featuring music from Handel’s Ariodante and Alcina, as well as lesser-known works, Joanna Harries (mezzo-soprano) explores some of Carestini (and Handel’s) greatest hits.
