The Rival Queens

The Rival Queens

Performed by Emily Owen (soprano), Jenni Harper (soprano), Satoko Doi-Luck (harpsichord), Kate Conway (viola da gamba), Aileen Henry (harp) and Charles MacDougall (tenor).

Description

“…it is certainly an apparent Shame that two such well bred Ladies should call Bitch and Whore, should scold and fight like any Billingsgates.” (John Arbuthnot, 1727)

Dive into a world of jealousy, fiery tempers, and more than a little scandal in this immersive operatic experience. You will be led around the historic rooms of Handel House in the midst of the rehearsals for one of Handel’s operas.

Presented by Emily Owen (soprano), accompanied by members of early music ensemble Ceruleo and some special guests, a narrative will unfold through the house shedding light on the infamous rivalry between Handel’s divas Faustina Bordoni and Francesca Cuzzoni.

Come and experience something entirely new fashioned from something old.
