On 11th April, 1735 Handel hosted an open rehearsal in Brook Street for Alcina. With diverse overtures, suites and arias, we conjure up the magic of opera in the very same room.

Laurence Cummings

Laurence Cummings is one of Britain's most exciting and versatile exponents of historical performance both as a conductor and a harpsichord player. He is currently Musical Director of the London Handel Festival, Academy of Ancient Music and Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música in Porto. The 2020/21 season saw his last edition of the Internationale Händel-Festpiele Göttingen, where he was Artistic Director from 2011-2021.

Frequently praised for his stylish and compelling performances in the opera house, his career has taken him across Europe where he has conducted productions at houses including Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opernhaus Zurich, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Gothenburg Opera, Opéra de Lyon, Théâtre du Châtelet, Opera North, Theater an der Wien, Garsington Opera and at the Linbury Theatre Covent Garden. Equally at home on the concert platform, he is regularly invited to conduct both period and modern instrument orchestras worldwide, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The English Concert, Handel and Haydn Society Boston, Croatian Baroque Orchestra, La Scintilla Zurich, Juilliard415, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Musikcollegium Winterthur, St Paul Chamber Orchestra, Basel Chamber Orchestra, Wroclaw Baroque Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Washington National Symphony Orchestra, St Louis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Jerusalem Symphony and in the UK with Royal Northern Sinfonia, Hallé Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Ulster Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra. His numerous recordings include discs for Sony Classical, Harmonia Mundi, Chandos, Naxos and BIS.

As well as his regular commitments his future plans include productions for Theater Basel, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and at Dutch National Opera.
