Heaven & Hell

Chantefable present a programme of music by Handel and his European contemporaries interspersed with spoken poetry and improvisation to explore the duality of the human condition. Featuring libretti in English, Italian and German, the languages that Handel set to music are at the forefront of this programme that explores the concept of heaven and hell in music and poetry. Chantefable are Mariana Rodrigues (soprano) and Andrew Cowie (harpsichord).

Chantefable

Chantefable is a one-of-a-kind song and story experience developed by vocalist Mariana Rodrigues and keyboardist Andrew Cowie. The word chantefable refers to a 13th-century French tradition of ‘song and story’, alternating spoken text and sung passages. Inspired by this ancient form, the duo combines vocal music, spoken poetry and improvised music, with each performance offering a unique blend of early music, folk, jazz, opera, oratorio and Renaissance repertoire.

Debuting at the Royal Academy of Music in 2023, Chantefable has since performed across the UK and internationally. Recent appearances include a double recital debut at the Royal Albert Hall and performances at the Brighton Early Music Festival, Leeds Song, Stoke Newington Early Music Festival and Islington Festival. The duo also collaborates with concert series for babies, families and people living with Alzheimer's.

Chantefable is delighted to have been selected as Leeds Song Young Artists 2026 and BREMF Emerging Artists 2025/26.
