Jane Austen

Jane Austen’s Mr Handel

Literary Music present a programme of music by Handel from the Jane Austen music collection, which would have been played in the Austen household, including extracts from Water Music, Judas Maccabeus as well as recitatives and arias from Handel’s most famous operas. This programme is performed in full Regency costume, with period music interspersed with readings from novels and entertaining descriptions of life in the Regency era.

The Literary Music Ensemble 1600

Literary Music

Literary Music was formed in 2011 by soprano Rosie Lomas and harpsichordist Katarzyna Kowalik whilst studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

Rosie made her operatic debut at English National Opera in Two Boys by Nico Muhly and has since returned for productions including Philip Glass's Akhnaten and The Perfect American. She has also performed with Longborough Festival Opera, Opera Holland Park and the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, where her performance as Wendy in Peter Pan was described as "magnificently sung and played".

Polish-British harpsichordist Katarzyna Kowalik performs as both a soloist and chamber musician across the UK and Europe. A former Handel House Talent Scheme participant, she has appeared with leading period ensembles and at festivals including the London Handel Festival and Brighton Early Music Festival. Alongside her performing career, she is director of the Royal Baroque ensemble and is a passionate music educator.
